CHURCH / Igreja de São Paulo - Ruínas, Castelo de Vide, PortugalCHURCH / Igreja de São Paulo - Ruínas, Castelo de Vide, Portugal

The church of São Paulo - located at the western tip of the Serra de Castelo de Vide, on the hill named in the 12th century "rostrum de Melrica" - is now a ruined building, which is very difficult to access because of the dense vegetation that surrounds it . It locates itself sensibly in the place where, in 1509/1510, Duarte Darmas designed one of the watchtowers of Castelo de Vide. It is possible that part of the temple (the main chapel) has used in its construction what would remain of the military lookout structure. Observable remains seem to point in this direction. Probably built in the second half of the sixteenth century, the church had four small compartments, still recognizable today in the ruins: single nave, main chapel, sacristy and another space whose functionality we do not know, perhaps the hermit's house. There are no indications that allow us to glimpse what the façade of the temple would be like, facing the source or its cover. The main chapel is quadrangular and was covered by a hemispherical dome, with still whitewashed remains.

It is a chapel filiável in the vats mouriscas, of which there are numerous copies throughout the south of Portugal. Only in the municipality of Castelo de Vide are there at least two more, unfortunately also ruined: the hermitages of Senhora dos Virtudes (in Vale da Bexiga) and São Silvestre (next to the road to Póvoa), which you can still join ousia of Our Lady of Penha, although it is circular. Nearby, in the county of Portalegre, we also have the side chapel of Senhora da Alegria, in the church of Carreiras, and the ruins of the small church of São Tomé, at the top of Mount Penha. Without knowing to what extent they are only late emanations of the Moorish tradition or ancient vestiges of cultic spaces of Fatimid Islam, then Christianized, these structures are in any way a historical and architectural reminiscence of the Muslim hermits, related to popular cults Islamized or integrated in a very Islamist heterodox, close to Sufism. In the words of Artur Goulart de Melo Borges, they are constituted by "a cubic body with a hemispherical cupular covering, lined externally or by simple plaster letting its characteristic shape be seen, or by four-sided roof dripping in a curvature like the dome" ( Borges, 1985: 198). Simultaneously with oratories and military stations, there lived "an ascetic saint - Marabout or Marabout - who received and guided the faithful there and where he could be buried, thus continuing this place to be venerated. The term "morabito" even went so far as to mean the building itself "(Borges, 1985: 200). According to this researcher, these structures can be divided into several typologies, depending on their strategic location. The church of São Paulo de Castelo de Vide belongs to typology 1A, since it has a strategic situation in pronounced altitude, allowing to encompass vast panoramic, associated with the isolation. The other types are as follows: 1B, if the altitude situation is linked to a location on the outskirts of the villages; 1C, if the altitude joins a location within the settlements; 2, if they are isolated, but without altitude, associated with roads, rivers or watchtowers; 3A, if they have no apparent strategic situation and exist on the outskirts of the villages; and 3B, if they are located in the villages, with no discernible strategic situation (Borges, 1985: 200-201).

It is not known for certain when the abandonment and ruin of this small church of Castelo de Vide (whose ruins need conservation and appreciation) were given. We believe, however, that they will have occurred already in the late eighteenth or nineteenth century, since in 1758 the hermitage of Sao Paulo was still cult.
